Art & Design

Creativity, imagination and self expression are embedded within the heart of the art department.

From year 7 to year 9 students build up their confidence, enthusiasm and skills, working with a variety of 2D and 3D media in order to communicate their ideas and visual experiences with competence and flair. They learn how to appreciate and value images and artefacts from different cultures and times and reflect on the meaning of their own work and the work of others. They are encouraged to experiment with different disciplines including drawing and painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, textiles, photography, computer graphics and more with an enjoyment of art and creativity fostered from the beginning.

As they progress, girls study the EDEXCEL GCSE and A Level art courses. Through their course work they further their fine art skills and are able to follow their personal explorations in their specialist areas guided by their teachers. History of art is taught within the practical lessons and is an important component of both the GCSE and the A level course.

The experienced staff, all practicing artists, work together within the Creative Studies options to offer expertise in painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, textiles and jewellery making. Courses and clubs in these areas combined with life drawing classes are all part of a rich and varied extra-curricular art programme.

We visit many local and national art galleries including York City Art Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the London and Paris galleries. Artists are invited to school to talk to girls and run workshops. Art exhibitions are often held in school offering the opportunity to broaden the girls’ artistic experiences. Art clubs and cross curricular activities are regularly held.

Our girls go on to study a variety of degree courses including; Architecture, History of Art, Fine Art, Sculpture, Textiles, Fashion, Design, Engineering and Art Foundation Courses. Girls have continued their studies at Cambridge (Architecture), The Royal College of Art (Fashion), Wimbledon and St Martins (Fine art). We must not forget our own Rachel Howard, born in 1969, a contemporary painter who attended the Mount School from the age of 16.
