Geography
Geography provides understanding into people and places, as well as insight into the way the human and physical processes interact.
Geography is a popular subject at The Mount with numerous students opting to take it at GCSE and A-Level and many continuing to study Geography at University. One of the key reasons for its popularity is its relevance to our lives, and this is central to our approach.
Geography provides understanding into people and places, as well as insight into the way the human and physical processes interact. For example, are droughts, floods and hurricanes natural phenomena, or the result of human activity? This understanding helps girls to explore their own place in the world and look at their values and responsibilities to other people, to the environment and to the sustainability of the planet. They also learn important practical skills: how to read a map, analyse data, solve problems and work successfully in teams.
At GCSE and A-Level, fieldwork is an integral component of the course and involves collecting data, processing information and analysing results. We have annual residential field trips which over the last few years have included the Lake District, North Wales, Yorkshire Wolds the Yorkshire Dales. The department also has taken students to visit Iceland.
We maintain close, productive links with the local branch of the Geographical Association and attend lectures on a variety of subjects such as hazard management, flooding and international security.
