Mathematics
Vibrant, exciting, challenging, breadth of opportunity, fun .... Just a few of the words our students might use to describe the Maths Department here.
We provide opportunities to take a student’s potential in Maths to the highest level. We offer OCR Additional Maths alongside the GCSE for our most able students, and the chance to do Maths and Further Maths as a double A-Level option.
These higher-level achievements are made possible through the very stable foundations we provide earlier on. We apply Maths to real situations during Years 7 to 9 so the girls can see its relevance to them. We try to make the subject dynamic and interactive, bringing these approaches into the classroom.
We ensure we cater for all levels of Maths ability and run a weekly clinic, open to all on a drop-in basis. We have a good take up in Maths at A-Level and many of our students continue with related courses like Maths and Statistics, Business and Engineering.
There is a buzz surrounding Maths in the School, helped in no small part by some of our extra-curricular activities. We enter girls at junior, intermediate and senior levels in the Maths Trust challenge papers. We also host the regional final of the UK Maths Trust team challenge – a remarkable event which sees teams of four answering Maths questions at a breakneck pace over the space of a day.
On World Maths Day, our students take part in live online mental arithmetic challenges, pitting their wits against others anywhere in the world. The first year this took place, our girls were to enthusiastic that they won the School a free subscription to Mathletics – an online maths resource!
