School House - Community Spirit
School House Community Spirit
There is always something going on in School House, whether it’s an activity for girls to opt in to after school, walking the dogs with the Housemistress, weekend baking or crafts, a film night, games night or a whole-house event such as a meal out or a house party; activities are available every day and in doing things together there is so much to gain both for individuals and for the community.
School House girls have an ongoing collection of clothes, shoes and other treasures in need of a new home which they deliver to local charity shops when the box gets too full. They also look forward to visiting the animals when they deliver old newspapers and towels to York’s RSPCA shelter.
The House Committee (which is on a rolling programme so that everyone gets a turn) keeps a watchful eye on the recycling and charity activities of the house, as well as working on other initiatives to further develop the boarding community. The girls regularly bake a mountain of brownies, cream-teas and other treats to serve at an open house event to say thank you to all of the special individuals who together make our community work – the maintenance, catering and domestic teams, the office staff, health staff and the teachers. In our weekly House Meetings we make plans for new and exciting ways to keep our community smiling.
Weekends are all about the boarding community; there’s no Saturday school so there’s plenty of time to relax as well as get out there and do something completely different. While Saturdays are generally very active with activities, trips and time to go to town, Sundays are quiet days featuring Brunch, which runs all morning, and Meeting for Worship which is a Quaker-style gathering of the whole boarding community and a valued time for all to take moment for reflection.
