Fairtrade in Yorkshire School Award 2012

27/01/2012
Six of our S8 girls, Ailish Brown, Megan Butterfield, Jacqui Smale, Isobel Sygrove, Hannah Talbot and Esme Weeks, and Anne Partridge, Geography Teacher, attended the 'Take a step for Fair Trade' Conference at York St John University on Tuesday 24 January.  They were invited to the conference after entering a competition set up by the Centre for Global Education at York St John University.  Anne Partridge submitted examples of her schemes of work, lesson plans and resources that cover fair trade and child slavery along with examples of the girls' work.

They all listened to addresses from different speakers on a range of topics including Child Slavery by Professor Gary Craig of the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation, the benefits of fair trade and a presentation by Jeremy Piercy founder and Managing Director of Shared Earth Ltd on his Walk Against Crime Campaign.

The girls were all inspired by stories of how other York schools have embraced fair trade and are full of ideas of how we can further raise the awareness of fair trade at The Mount.

At the end of the conference the girls and Anne Patridge were delighted to find ourselves presented with a 'Fairtrade in Yorkshire School Award 2012' recognising the steps we have made in School to promote fair trade.  The girls were photographed with the Mayor receiving our certificate.
