A York schoolgirl has qualified as an instructor in the Japanese art of Madoka Flower Design.
Jennifer Choy Pui Sze, 19, of The Mount School, qualified in June after completing the instructor course in creating the ceramic clay flowers in her native Hong Kong during holidays. Jennifer first took up making the flowers 15 years ago when she and her mother walked past a shop offering courses. “My mum asked, ‘Do you want to try?’. I tried it and I loved it.” She said: “When I first learned, we were using cake icing to make the flowers, and gradually the students worked their way up to using actual ceramic clay. The petals of the flowers are too fine to be fired in a kiln. You have to air-dry them to preserve their delicacy.” Having achieved her instructor’s certificate, Jennifer’s next ambition is to complete the Master Certificate. “As a teacher, I can open a shop and teach my own students,” she said. “But as a Master, I can open a centre and train instructors.”
Jennifer, who in her sixth year at The Mount, would like to pursue a career as an artist.
