Our History

The story of The Mount School began in the 18th Century when pupils travelled to York by stage coach. From its origins in Castlegate, to its present home, The Mount quickly developed a reputation for academic excellence, social enlightenment and the training of young women as teachers. Its pupils included the daughters of most of the leading Quaker families of the Victorian era, including the Tukes, Cadburys, Rowntrees, and many more associated with some of Britain’s great industries, banking and Parliamentary or social reforms.

The Mount’s Quaker ethos enlarged to adopt a broadly Christian outlook with an enlightened attitude to world affairs. A succession of remarkable pioneering Headmistresses faced the challenges of two world wars, expanding and adapting The Mount to the evolving education and society, to make it a truly international school at the forefront of women’s education.
