There are lots of creative opportunities on offer at The Mount, allowing our pupils to enjoy the arts while learning new skills.

Pupils of all ages foster a love and appreciation of the arts that will remain with them for the rest of their lives

We strongly believe the arts offer our pupils a medium for self-expression, passion and emotion encouraging them to challenge themselves. The arts provide more than just creativity, but develop key life skills including confidence, perseverance and focus.

Musically, pupils are spoilt for choice

From The Mount Junior School to Sixth Form pupils have the opportunity learn to play an instrument. Visiting peripatetic staff provide instrumental and singing lessons and pupils can enroll for a variety of lessons. Pupils have the opportunity to join choirs, vocal groups, orchestra, wind band, swing band and many other musical groups. Concerts take place every term both at the school and in a range of breath-taking venues including York Minster and Duncombe Park. In 2020 The Mount School York became the first school in North Yorkshire to gain the internationally recognised designation as an ‘All Steinway School’ taking delivery of ten new  Steinway pianos. All pupils have the opportunity to participate in dance and drama

In addition to the curriculum pupils can join drama and dance clubs or take part in full scale performances.  From nativities in the Pre-School, to full scale musicals in the Junior School and Senior School, Mount pupils are no strangers to the stage! Our dedicated drama teacher runs LAMDA classes taught in small groups.  The results of these exams in recent years have been exceptional, with many pupils achieving distinctions for their work.

Art at The Mount aims to develop pupils’ creativity and expression through a wide range of practices

Passion for the subject abounds from our art teachers.  Younger children develop self-expression, fine motor skills and colour recognition as they enjoy their first forays into painting.  In the Junior School and Senior School, there are plenty of opportunities for pupils to explore a variety of media including oils, clay, chalks and more.  Pupils’ work is displayed throughout the School and in our dedicated art gallery.

“Inspectors observed A level photographic and multi-media artwork of exceptional standard.”

“A very high proportion of pupils taking LAMDA Speech and Drama examinations achieve distinction; pupils spoke readily about how participation in this activity has transformed their ability to speak confidently.”
