British Artist Ian Murphy returns to The Mount

This week we are delighted to welcome back to The Mount renowned British contemporary artist Ian Murphy, to host our Art Summer School.

Pupils attending the course began the week creating pen and ink sketches of intricate architecture, before expanding into techniques and composition. The young artists will then follow a creative journey, from initial idea conception and musings on a sketchbook, all the way through to a final piece of paint work.

The weeklong Art course provides pupils from across York with the chance to work up close and personal with a professional artist. There is a focus on providing ideal preparation for portfolio developmental work, required at both GSCE and A Level. The attendees will finish the week having gained advice and guidance that will set their application to higher education institutions apart from others.

The critical development journey is particularly special to Ian as within his decades long successful career, exploration and growth has seen him transition from initial industrialised compositions, which featured a strong accent on dramatic lighting and heavy tones, representative of the ruggedness and industrialisation of his hometown of Sheffield, into encompassing a much more minimal approach to lighting and a focus on derelict buildings and forlorn habitats, seen in his gallery here.
