East Greenland Expedition Group Confirmed

We are delighted to announce that the expedition group for the Borealis Society East Greenland Expedition in 2024 has now been identified and has begun their preparations for this exciting venture. The first part of this will be a whole expedition group visit to the Royal Geographical Society in South Kensington to use the Foyle Reading Room and Map Room, in the Spring Term, to begin the preparations towards identifying and finalising the specific expedition objectives.

A number of places have been kept open for any new members and, in particular, for new entrants to College from outside The Mount School in September 2023. The deadline for the final group makeup is not until October 2023 by which time the logistical preparations, bookings and training will be well underway.

Mr David Griffiths, Principal of The Mount School, has also set up a School sponsorship scheme to develop young leaders for the future to support the School’s outdoor education and expedition programme and to foster the personal development aspect of the School’s holistic educational package. This scheme initially involves one of the pupil participants in the recent first Mount School Borealis Society Expedition to North-west Iceland (in 2022) being chosen to begin training as an Assistant Leader for the East Greenland Expedition. Mr David Griffiths is thrilled to announce that Mary Betteridge has agreed to accept the School’s sponsorship in the pursuit of her Mountain Leader and Wilderness ‘Far from Help’ First Aid qualifications as she seeks to acquire the skills and experiences that will enhance and facilitate her development as an expedition leader of the future. Graduating from The Mount in July 2022 with four top grades at A Level, Mary has recently embarked on a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of York and has already joined the Mountaineering Club at the University.

This scheme is one that will particularly target those who have recently left The Mount and are now in a GAP year, or at University, and who have been pupil members of previous Borealis Expeditions.

To discover more information about the Borealis Society, The Mount School are hosting a Winter Lecture Series, which we recommend all interested pupils, parents and family members attend.
