Growth: 2023 York Literature Festival Creative Composition Competition


The Mount is delighted to host the 2023 York Literature Festival‘s young person’s Creative Composition Competition. This year’s theme, Growth, invites young writers, poets and performance artists to compose original works for the competition.

Rules of Entry

  1. Entries must be composed in English. Incidental use of foreign languages or vernacular is allowed, but English must be the main language of your composition.
  2. No more than three entries are allowed per person, inclusive of all entry categories.
  3. All work must be original and unaided, and must have never been published, self-published, published on any website or online forum, broadcast nor won any other competition before March 2023.
  4. The three categories for entries are: Short Story (written), Poetry (written) and Performance (performed and submitted via Tiktok).


The competition is open to UK residents aged 18 years or under as of 31 August 2023.

There are three age categories for entries:

  • 11 years and under at 31 August 2023
  • 12 – 15 years of age at 31 August 2023
  • 16 – 18 years of age at 31 August 2023.

The performance category is open to 16 – 18 year olds only.

  • Short Stories should be no longer than 1,500 words.
  • Poems should be no longer than 30 lines.
  • Performance entries must not exceed 3 minutes’ duration.

How to Enter

Written entries must be legible and include the entrant’s full name, date of birth, contact email address, current school and a contact telephone number.

Performance entries must be submitted via Tiktok, tagged for @mountschoolyork and include the hashtag #YorkLiteratureFestival. For privacy, entries may also be messaged to The Mount’s Tiktok account @mountschoolyork.

All entries must be received at The Mount School York before 12 noon, Sunday 26 March, 2023.

Entries may be emailed to or sent via post to: York Literature Festival Competition, The Mount School York, Dalton Terrace, York YO24 4DD.

Prize Terms

  1. The competition is judged by a panel of adjudicators whose decision is final and no individual correspondence will be entered into. Appointed readers may assist the adjudicators by selecting shortlists.
  2. There will be prizes awarded for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed entries unless the adjudicators decide otherwise.
  3. Tiktok entries will be judged on content, delivery and production standards.
  4. The organisers reserve the right to change the panel of adjudicators without notice and not to award prizes if, in the opinion of the adjudicators, such action is justified.
  5. Winners will be announced and contacted between Monday 10 and Monday 17 April, 2023.
  6. Shortlisted entrants will receive an invitation to read their work at a special prizegiving event at The Mount School York on Saturday 29 April.
  7. Winners agree to have their winning entry, their first name, age and name of their current school or educational institution published. Entrants’ rights under
    General Data Protection Regulations are not affected.

Entry implies acceptance of the above rules.

Failure to comply with entry requirements will result in disqualification.

The competition is hosted by The Mount School York in celebration of the 2023 York Literature Festival.
