Chemistry Competitions

The Chemistry department has had a busy couple of weeks getting involved in competitions.
Flora (Year 9), Seren (Year 9), Emma (Year 10) and Ellen (Year 11) took part in the regional heat for the Royal Society of Chemistry Top of the Bench competition. This involved each girl taking a timed quiz. I am pleased to say the girls came a respectable 12th place. Well done girls!
College I Chemistry students recently took part in the 1st round of the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad. The girls sat a very challenging 2 hour paper with questions relating to real life Chemistry applications.
It was really challenging and I found the content interesting, particularly the Chemistry of lateral flow tests. This also links to what we are currently studying in Biology.” – Eleanor
I found it fascinating to learn that whipped cream contains nitrogen.” – Nitrogen
I especially found the healthcare side of the paper really interesting and that Scientists used existing technology to develop lateral flow tests.” – Sophie
The girls are now inspired to learn more in their Chemistry course and to explore more career options,” said Mrs Gingele, Head of Chemistry.
