Mount Girls Make Maths Look Easy, Consistently Achieving in National Maths Competitions

Maths can be tricky but Mount girls are mastering it.

In the UK Maths Trust’s recent Maths Competition for Girls, nine College girls (Years 12 and 13) all received certificates putting them in the top 5,000 girls for Maths in the country. Half of the girls were awarded Merits which puts them in the top 3,500!

New Head of Maths, Mike Dennett, said: “Championing Mathematics excellence in our young women is crucial as still only 31% of STEM students in Higher Education in the UK are women, and that is exactly what we do at The Mount.”

The Mathematics Competition for Girls was entered in record numbers by our students this year, with over half of our students achieving a prestigious Merit.

Next week our students tackle the Senior Mathematics Challenge, the biggest individual mathematics competition in the UK, and after half term we enter the Senior Team Mathematics Regional Heats at the University of York.

Students at the Mount School York will always be given the opportunity to challenge themselves in Mathematics, and are given the individualised support to achieve.

Alice, a younger entrant as only in Year 12, was proud to be The Mount’s highest scorer in the competition:

“We were given some difficult problems, no calculator, probability challenges, situational problems, inputting digits. It was tricky with the potential to be tripped up but I concentrated hard for just under an hour and a half and was pleased with my result, despite how taxing it was. It was worth it for a very pretty, sparkly certificate awarded in school morning meeting though!”

The Mount is proud to be a destination school for excellence in Maths in an increasingly competitive landscape.

Budding Mathematicians should book in for a tour and chat with our talented Maths Department team.
