Two Year 8 pupils were great ambassadors for The Mount at The York Civic Trust’s annual secondary school public speaking competition attended by nine schools across York.
Tackling the heading, ‘What was the purpose of the first schools founded in York?’ Agnes and Penelope charmed the large, gathered audience with insight into The Mount’s rich history, with facts, acting and comedy, praised by the judges.
Both pupils were presented with a certificate and complimentary family tickets for entrance to Fairfax House for their efforts.
Drama, English & LAMDA teacher, Catherine Jackley, said:
“Well done girls. You had poise, projection and style, natural public speakers. I was impressed with the way you wrote the speech together, so quickly, and found time to practice and self-edit. These skills will stand you in good stead for life.”
Guest speaker on the night, Chris Tuckley, who has worked at Jorvik Viking Centre for twenty years and is Head of Interpretation & Learning at York Archaeological Trust, said:
“A room full of people can seem intimidating and these young people have tonight been self-assured, persuasive, funny, confident, polished and courageous, and showed great affection for York with their research and observations. I commend them for developing this useful lifelong skill.”
