In our experience, happy children learn.  Our aim is to ensure that each child is happy and confident at school. We understand the importance of ‘play’ within the early years of a child’s school journey.

As well as being fun, play supports intellectual, emotional, creative, physical and social development. 

Therefore, our curriculum is play-based; activities take place both indoors and outdoors with a balance of adult focused and child initiated activities.  Learning in the Pre-School encourages children to be confident in their own ideas, make decisions, use their imagination, solve problems and take risks.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum.  It is planned around seven areas of learning and development specific to this young age. The areas of learning encompass:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Art and Design

Specialist Teaching

Pre-School children at The Mount are introduced to phonics and sounds gradually by concentrating on a sound each week.  Our  Pre-School teachers spend 30 minutes each day introducing phonics. Our Pre-School children are also given the opportunity to expand their vocabulary by learning French from a specialist French teacher. They also have a weekly music lesson taught by specialist music staff.

Outdoor Learning

Some children prefer to learn outside and we positively encourage all our pupils to do just that.  Our Pre-School children visit our onsite Forest School each week.  The area includes an outdoor classroom, kitchen and a log seating area with a camp fire.  In this setting the children learn to express their curiosity freely, asking questions and finding out about the world around them.
