The Mount Welcomes 13 Schools in to Share the Magic of Maths!

Today pupils in Years 7-9 travelled to The Mount for a UK Maths Trust Challenge 2025 competition.
Resilient Mathematicians applied themselves all day with four rounds of difficult Maths problems where they had to employ teamwork and individual brain power in equal measure.
UK Maths Trust Challenges have taken place here since the early 2000s, meaning there has been nearly 25 years of fun Maths right here at The Mount.
There was a brief break when The Mount’s event was the last one to take place in 2020 before lockdown. Last year the competitions returned on a smaller scale and today we were proud to be amongst the first schools to bring back this important competition, fully, as one of four across the country.
Vakare and Immy in Year 9 and Clemmie and Lucy in Year 8 represented The Mount and performed very well.
Congratulations to the winning schools which were Fulford, Ampleforth and Bootham, with strong performances from all.
All schools taking part brought teams of four who competed in four 45-minute rounds. The first one involved ten Maths problems, the second round involved two pairs solving down and cross clues, the third saw two pairs embarking on a shuttle round (where answers were needed to work out the next section) and the last round involved participants running relays to deliver their answers to teachers! (A perfect combination of Maths and PE).
Miss Mumby, Miss Nleya and Miss Mitchell ran the exciting day alongside volunteers from The UK Maths Trust. Thanks to them and to all the teachers across the schools.
Miss Mumby said:
“We love hosting this excellent competition. I am so proud of every pupil who took part in this fun yet taxing day. It was fantastic to get back to a busy competition of 14 schools in total. We hope to get back to the 30 or so schools we had pre-Covid, next year. It was great to see Maths colleagues who have been attending for years as well as some new faces.”
Head, Miss Wilby, said:
“We are proud to host this wonderful celebration of Maths. The atmosphere is amazing with the scratching of pens and heads as pupils strive to answer these challenging questions. Congratulations to all selected to take part, and to the top three schools, and we hope to see some of you again next year as we continue our firm commitment to celebrating Maths at The Mount.”
