Gold! Mount Dance Team Crowned Winners In The Great Big Dance Off as our Dance Studio Nears Completion!
Girls from Year 7 to Upper Sixth earned this impressive victory of The Great Big Dance Off regionals through their performance of a moving routine called ‘Righteous Peace’.
After a second-place finish last year, the team didn’t have much room for improvement, but after months of practice, they outdid themselves – bringing home gold and securing their place in the finals in June.
This dance achievement comes just as our brand-new state-of-the-art dance studio on site – which further positions us as a centre of performing arts excellence – nears completion, with mirrors just being installed.
The winning routine, first performed in our sell-out Mount Dance Showcase recently to rapturous applause, is an emotional, lyrical piece that reflects on war and emphasises the Quaker desire to have peace.
The piece impressed both the expert judging panel and the audience, resulting in our dance being the highest scoring of the entire event with 94/100 from one judge who awarded the team 10/10 for ‘crowd appeal’ with its emotional impact and authentic storytelling. The team also scored highly across ‘complexity,’ ‘dynamics’ and ‘creativity’ not to mention ‘technique.’
Fiona Newman, Director of Sport and Choreographer, said:
“We’re so proud of this lyrical dance, ‘Righteous Peace,’ which involves pupils from all senior year groups, ages 11-18, and reflects our school’s proudly Quaker ethos, reflecting on war, and desiring peace.
This was the best the girls have ever performed this complex dance routine and the judge’s scores reflected this. They truly deserve this trophy which has pride of place in our school reception. Next stop, the finals!
And we’re so delighted with our new custom-designed dance studio, light and airy, the perfect site for future award-winning rehearsals and choreography.”
India, Year 10, said: “It was so fun and I loved it. The atmosphere was cool. I’m excited to do it all over again at the finals.”
Lucy, Year 10, said: “This was the best we’ve ever performed the routine. I’m so proud of everyone. We were all happy and shocked to win!”
