Talented Mount pupil Izzy in Year 9 has been selected to sing the classic Christmas solo, ‘Walking in the Air’ by Howard Blake (from Raymond Briggs’ famous picture book and animation ‘The Snowman’) in a one-day/night showing of the film with live orchestra at York Barbican in December.
Izzy was chosen as only one of two performers from 24 auditionees on Wednesday and found out the exciting news in school on Friday.
Izzy is a Music Scholar at The Mount and was previously a Performing Arts Scholar here for two years. She performed in the last senior school production of ‘The Snow Queen’ and has a lead part in the upcoming ‘Witches’ production, and regularly sings at school concerts and in the Chamber and Senior choirs.
She is also a member of The National Youth Choir Great Britain after successfully auditioning!
Izzy said:
“I am over the moon (just like the boy in The Snowman). I cried ‘oh my gosh’ and told my friend when I found out at lunchtime.
I want a career in music and acting, my dream is to perform at The West End, so this is just the best news. I’ve watched The Snowman many times and it’s such a lovely story.”
Dr Andrew Passmore, Director of Music at The Mount, said:
“Izzy, as a Music Scholar, contributes so much at school. It’s lovely to see her excel outside of school too and the whole school community celebrates her success. I’m sure Izzy will perform this classic piece at one of our scholars’ concerts soon.”
Carrot Productions, who chose Izzy, sent this message to her:
“Congratulations. We’re thrilled for you. We were very impressed by your audition and felt your beautiful pure voice was perfectly suited to this song.”
Izzy is continuing this piece of music’s connection with York because former chorister, York Minster songman and operatic tenor: Peter Auty, a current York resident, born in Richmond, sang the original version in the 1982 film, not Aled Jones, as commonly believed.
