Third Annual Ian Murphy Art School at The Mount is Another Amazing Week!

Esteemed international fine artist, often featured on the GCSE curriculum, Ian Murphy’s third summer at The Mount has seen another crop of outstanding art produced right before our eyes.

Young artists from across Yorkshire joined contemporary workshops experimenting with drawing, sketching, painting and mixed media. Working alongside Ian Murphy, they developed a whole new set of creative skills with this excellent opportunity to enhance their sketching & painting skills and work with mixed media. The workshops are ideal for pupils who like to take creative risks and push artistic boundaries.

This bespoke course is the ideal opportunity for pupils looking to strengthen their portfolio and creative practice ahead of their GCSE or A Level examinations.
Ian shared his insight into the creative processes he follows and where he draws inspiration from. Pupils learned about scale and how to transform their initial sketches to large-scale paintings through:

1) Investigation – what will the project be?
2) Development – develop ideas, skills and techniques
3) Connection – connect with the artist and understand their teachings
4) Outcome – produce a final piece of work.

Ian focussed on providing support and guidance to each pupil helping them to produce a strong portfolio of work. “It’s important that pupils integrate the work into their own individual practice whatever level they are at, whether it be GCSE, A Level or preparation for future study,” he said.

At the end of the week the young artists will have produced 7-8 pieces of work in a variety of media including pen, graphite and oil painting.

2023 attendee Lucy, Year 10, said:  “It’s been a great week! I’ve not worked with oil paints before and on this scale. I’ve learnt a lot and developed new skills throughout the week.”

Ian Murphy, said: “The course aims to give students a breadth of experience. Artists should try everything before specialising too early. Today we started oil painting which can be tricky but the students have risen to the challenge and I can’t wait to see their portfolios. This week is just the start they can continue with the pieces they’ve started here and see where it takes them.

The Mount Head of Art, Rachel Milton, said: “The course gives students the gift of time to immerse themselves in their art, concentrate for long periods and do a deep dive in to what they are trying to express. This is why the results are often so breathtaking. Bravo!”
