The Mount has come top of Yorkshire girls schools and third for A Levels in league tables published annually by the Sunday Times.
The table, which orders the top independent and state secondary schools in the country, lists The Mount in the top 150 schools using double-weighted A Level results and GCSE results. The Mount scored 81.2 for A Level A* to B grades and 55.7 for GCSE A* to A grades based on results published in August. The 81.2 score places The Mount third in the region behind Queen Ethelburgas and Bradford Grammar School.
Girls’ A Level Education
The Mount, which nurtures a rounded education and encourages a life-long love of learning, was a top girls school in the region for A Level results. Research published by the Girls’ Schools Association shows that learning in certain areas, particularly STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) subjects has girls doing far better in all-girl schools than in co-educational settings.

A-Level students at The Mount School in York are once again celebrating an excellent set of results with 45% of grades are gaining A*-A and 79% A*-B grades. 100% of students passed all subjects, 100% of Art pupils achieved A-A* grades, 75% of Geography students achieved A-A* grades and just under 40% of Maths pupils achieved A* grades. 80% of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) grades were A*-A.
Esme Weeks earned 3 A* grades to secure her place to study Medicine at Oxford. She also achieved an A* in her EPQ project. Esme, who is a Quaker, said, “It’s absolutely unbelievable, it hasnÕt sunk in yet.” The Mount Senior School is the UK’s only all-girl Quaker school and a leading light in educating girls.
As a Quaker school, The Mount has a well-earned reputation for its charitable work in the community.
Harriet Matthews, who achieved 4 A*s and an A and will read Geography at Edinburgh, had been instrumental in setting up the George Toplis Foundation, which supports, through sport, young people with autism or mental illness, and their families and carers. In June, pupils and staff held a rowathon to raise awareness for male mental health, with funds raised donated to the George Toplis Foundation.
Amelia Cook, who achieved 3 B grades, will play the part of Charity Barnum in November with the York Light Youth’s production of Barnum. Throughout her school career, Amelia has appeared in theatrical productions, including the world premiere of My Generation by Alice Nuttall (formerly of Chumbawumba) at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds and singing the part of Anita with York Light Youth’s presentation of West Side Story. Plans are currently under way at The Mount for a new Performing Arts Hub which will enhance teaching and achievement in dance, music, speech and drama and performance arts.
Adrienne Richmond, Principal, said, “I am delighted with this year’s A-Level results. Our girls have done incredibly well, yet again. I know they have worked extremely hard and I am very proud of their success. Whilst this is a credit to their hard work and the dedication of our specialist teaching staff, it is also an outcome that is a hallmark of an all-girls’ education. Girls do better, academically, in an all-girls environment for a number of reasons: our teaching is geared to girls’ learning styles, career aspirations are not limited (which is also why our girls have outstanding results in STEM subjects), girls are more confident about making decisions and learning from their mistakes and there are fewer distractions leaving them free to pursue academic excellence. Our girls’ education is not compromised they are put first and taught that nothing is beyond their reach. The range and diversity of the subjects the girls are going on to study reflects this. I am extremely proud of all they have achieved.

Leavers from The Mount progress to a broad range of university destinations. In this year alone, girls went on to study courses in Ivy League, Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.
