Ruby’s Icelandic Adventures

I would say navigating the routes out as part of the Gold DofE Team (Martha, Rosie and I). The paths were hard to find and we needed determination to keep positive. For example, when the weather changed, or when beginning a steep climb.
Definitely the hot springs, there were a few surprising pools which were a lovely treat, especially after a 9 hour day of walking. The warmth was the best feeling, I couldn’t feel my toes!
I’d say the camping part was difficult as a whole…3 weeks in a tent! I compared my sleeping bag to my bed every night. It was hard to pack up our things each morning and cooking everything on a trangia. Luckily my tent mate, Rosie, was a star and we worked together to entertain each other by laughing at the others, singing songs from musicals, or playing cards extremely competitively.
I remember on the 5th or 6th day we had an extremely steep climb to complete. We were all huffing and puffing and I looked around and this was the moment where I thought, ‘I’m going to be okay’ as I realised, on this trip we do everything as a team and we will accomplish what I once thought was unimaginable.
Don’t second guess going on this trip if you enjoy walking or participate in DofE, or if you just want to spend time with your friends. It’s life changing!
I got a shower, had an Indian takeaway and finally crashed in my freshly made bed.
That the only thing which will prevent me from doing something is my mind.
I would like to visit Africa, possibly work my way around the countries and scuba dive on the coast lines.
I am going to Amsterdam and Mykonos for my holiday. When I get back I will be writing my EPQ and personal statement!
Thank you to the leaders of this trip for giving us the opportunity to experience something which very little will.
