Fraud Blocker

The Creative Arts provide essential skills in equipping our pupils with the self-confidence and assurance for which they are widely recognised.  From Reception to Year 6 we offer a wide range of opportunities in Music, Drama, Dance and Art.

At The Mount Junior School we believe that the Creative Arts help pupils to learn to communicate their thoughts and ideas, and to develop their imagination and self-expression.

Music

Music is taught by specialist music teachers through our curriculum. It is our aim to nurture, in all our pupils from Reception to Year 6, an appreciation and enjoyment of music in its many forms.  Children are inspired to explore their own musical talents and ambitions with some pupils learning two or even three instruments.  Visiting peripatetic staff teach individual music lessons in our dedicated music classrooms. Instrumental lessons on offer include:

·      Violin ·      Flute ·      Singing ·      Cello
·      Piano ·      Clarinet ·      Brass ·      Drums

Pupils can join a number of ensembles including Junior Choir, Junior Orchestra and String Group.  A love of music is evident throughout the Junior School and our pupils love nothing more than to sing and perform in our various music concerts during the year.

Dance and Drama

Dance and Drama is included in our curriculum from Reception to Year 6. The School has a dedicated performing arts classroom which is used by all year groups to allow extra space for creativity and movement.  Pupils also have opportunities to pursue their passions in extra-curricular activities including Speech and Drama lessons.  Pupils taking Speech and Drama lessons are able to take LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) exams and often pass with distinction.

“A very high proportion of pupils taking LAMDA Speech and Drama examinations achieve distinction; pupils spoke readily about how participation in this activity has transformed their ability to speak confidently.”
ISI Inspection 2018

All of our pupils have the opportunity to join in productions and concerts throughout the year. Most recently all of our Junior School pupils performed ‘It’s Time’, a look at time and the evolution of music and dance.  With dance, gymnastics, singing, musical performance and dramatic interpretations, it really was an outstanding production enjoyed by all.  Performing on the stage is an important part of personal development but it also encourages children to work together, developing team work and cooperation producing outstanding shows.

Art

Through their art lessons The Mount Junior School pupils develop self-expression and creativity.  Pupils have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of media including paints, clay and collage.  Through our curriculum pupils learn to understand and appreciate different styles of art. The Mount Junior School corridors are alive with artwork depicting the styles of Van Gough, Warhol, Picasso and many more.

The Mount Junior School pupils have access to the Senior School Art department, complete with a kiln and an enormous range of materials and resources allowing activities such as batik, pottery and textiles.
