Mount Old Scholar, Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Has Storm Named After Her!

York Press were keen to point out (link below) that Storm Jocelyn is named after our very own Old Scholar and leading astrophysicist, Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell (1956-61). She has visited school several times to kindly shared her scientific wisdom with our pupils. See news stories below.

Dame Jocelyn certainly took the world of Physics ‘by storm’ and we’re so proud to call her an Old Scholar and thank her for her support of The Mount over many years where she is a both a friend and legend.

Storm Jocelyn, was named by Irish weather service Met Éireann, because Dame Jocelyn was born in County Armagh, and is the tenth storm this season.

Dame Jocelyn told BBC News Northern Ireland in September that it was “a big surprise” and “a nice idea” as “it makes storms more memorable and helps forecasters get the story across. Jocelyn would be the 10th storm of the season, and hopefully they won’t get that far…”
