Mount Quartet Wins Silver Medal for Chamber Music from Global Genius Music Competition 2025

Music runs through the heart of The Mount School York. Recently, the talents of our String Quartet have been recognised in winning the Silver trophy for the Chamber Music category of the Global Genius Music Competition 2025.

Earlier this year, the accomplished members of our String Quartet: Katie on first violin, Mr Tong on second violin, Levi on viola & Emily on cello, submitted a masterful performance to the competition. They played the soundtrack from the esteemed Christmas movie, ‘The Polar Express’, composed by Alan Silvestri and arranged by Glen Ballard.

The piece was a skilfully performed, with contrasts in tempo and dynamics to mimic the magical journey The Polar Express embarks on, and children’s excitement and uncertainty as they travel through the snow. Our String Quartet played masterfully, creating the ethereal atmosphere characterised in the film.

Director of Music, Andrew Passmore said, “We are so proud of our string quartet’s amazing achievements for the second year running (after last year’s quartet obtained Silver for Best Classical Musicians Award). Their commitment to rehearsals and wonderful talents have combined to produce winning performances. Congratulations on achieving a Silver medal as music continues to thrive at our school. Bravo!”
