Congratulations Izzy

Congratulations to Izzy (Y9) who achieved a fantastic third place in today’s Yorkshire Athletics Championships in the U15 girls’ pole vault.

Izzy had a very busy day at the fixture as she also competed in shot put and hurdles.

Izzy, who trains with the York City Athletics Club, is a keen all-round competitor. She said, “This was my first Yorkshire Championships and I was really pleased to get third place. I didn’t get a new personal best (PB) but I was really happy with how I did because I haven’t been able to train through the winter, and I only started pole vault a year ago. I hope that by the end of the season I will have improved my PB by about 60cm.

Izzy was inspired by meeting Team GB triple jump champion, Laura Samuel, earlier in the term. “Meeting Laura Samuel in the first week of term was brilliant. She was really inspirational and talked to us about what it takes to become an athlete. You have to eat so healthily! (I don’t really do that yet.) She made the circuits exercise fun and exciting for everyone and it was really nice to be listening to her with the Junior girls there as well,” she said.

She is competing again this weekend for York in the pole vault, hurdles and running relay. “Athletes at York City encourage each other at the events, so it really helps my confidence when I hear my friends cheering from the sidelines.

Izzy is very modest about her athletics achievements, and humbly passes on any praise to her peers who all pursue extra-curricular interests outside of school, including the arts, music, performing arts, riding and other sports.  “I haven’t told my school friends about my medal. It’s really nice that everyone in my year has different talents and interests outside of school.
