Dame Margaret Drabble Re-visits The Mount

Author and Mount Alumni, Dame Margaret Drabble, was in York recently giving a lecture as part of the York Literary Festival and we were thrilled that she found time to come in to visit us and meet some of the current pupils.

Dame Margaret Drabble, one of The Mount’s four living dames among our alumnae, visits The Mount and enjoyed a cordial Choc Lunch with College Literature pupils

While she was here she paid tribute to her school English teacher, Mrs Scalway, who she described as being better than any of her tutors at Cambridge! She said that Drama teaching was also strong at The Mount and remembered performing in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Mount was where Margaret found her love for theatre.

After leaving The Mount, Margaret studied at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she gained a starred first in English and went on to spend a year with the Royal Shakespeare Company before pursuing what really is a stellar literary career.

Principal Adrienne Richmond said, “We were all delighted that Margaret Drabble took the time to come and visit her old school. She conveyed how impressed she was with recent developments. It was very enjoyable to spend some time with her as she reflected on some of her memories of school days at The Mount.”
