Talented Rugby player, Ruby in College II, has been selected to represent the County with Yorkshire RFU.
Despite being struck down with a nasty illness during the trial weekend, Ruby impressed the team of Yorkshire Scouts with her performance. She was praised for her resilience and positive attitude. Ruby admirably pushed aside any signs of illness as she put her all into showing the panel just what she was capable of. Drawing upon previous trial experience, Ruby understood the importance of going above and beyond to stand out – she quickly volunteered herself for line-outs, enabling her to demonstrate her full sporting potential. Reflecting on how she achieved this, Ruby explained, “You have to be brutal at trials. When I tried out for the U15 squad I was young and naïve; I knew more about what to expect this time round.”
The trial session was held at Sandal Rugby Club and involved participating in a series of fitness and skills-based activities. Each activity was designed to show a different skill set, such as contact, receiving, and running and was followed by a 15-minute game in which players had to demonstrate why they should be chosen.
To prepare for the Yorkshire trials, Ruby continued to train with her current club, Selby RUFC and focussed training on tackling as she knew this would be an important skill to develop for future games. It wasn’t too long before Ruby received the good news and was able to celebrate her achievements, having got the call-back that very same evening.
“I wasn’t expecting it, I didn’t think I played as well as I usually do but I was chuffed to bits”
“It is something I can tick off my bucket list. Being able to represent my county is something that is really special to me, and I am so excited to play a game.”
“This is just the next level for me; the girls are so talented, and it is such an honour to play with them.”
Ruby will play her first match for Yorkshire later this month, followed by a second game in December and two more early next year. In the future, Ruby hopes to play Rugby for her university’s first team and has ambitions to study Sports and Exercise Science at Durham University next September.
