We’re so proud of our community partnerships at The Mount School York, sharing our talents and skills.
If you’re aged 7-17, love music, and are at a loose end on a Saturday 10.30-11.30am, we have just the opportunity for you whether you have sung before or are a beginner.
Talented Music Director, Alison Forster, who teaches piano and music theory at our school, runs a voluntary inclusive community choir which sees young people learn to read music and perform complicated repertoire from aged 7! Each term culminates in a concert in The Mount’s lovely historic performance hall.
The standard achieved is astonishing. Choir members often go on to improve and excel in other musical areas. A choir member who became the piano accompanist leaves soon after being selected against tough competition to become an organ scholar.
The choir’s recent Christmas Concert saw beautiful, moving pieces like ‘One Candle’ with stunning solos performed alongside a super-speed medley of popular carols that wowed the audience.
Parents were also invited to join in (with some of the easier repertoire)!
The Mount’s Director of Music, Andrew Passmore, was also on hand to play the piano while Alison conducted. A family-feel Quaker school the music department is always happy to support and host community music initiatives.
He said, “The choir is absolutely wonderful under Alison’s brilliant direction. The children and young people, including some of our students, clearly love coming every Saturday. It’s important to share with the local community and there’s certainly community spirit in spades when the choir gathers each Saturday. Give it a try!”
Pearl, a member, said: “I love singing with my new friends and learning the songs each term for the concert at the end. Alison is lovely. I like it when she surprises us with funny signs to make us smile when we sing. I was scared to go on stage at first but now I join in.”
