Reception 2024

Starting “Big” school doesn’t have to be daunting! At The Mount Junior School our teachers and staff work hard to ensure that all children feel secure and valued as they settle into school life.  

In Reception, children are given the time and space to discover! They are encouraged to be curious, ask questions and explore. Children build new friendships in a safe and fun environment within our spacious grounds. 

In Reception, we focus on play-based learning and exploration to develop children’s social, emotional, and communication skills.

We recognise that each child is unique and many of our activities are planned in response to observing pupils’ needs and interests. Our creative curriculum adapts to each child’s needs and interests. Our teachers use engaging techniques to nurture confident, enthusiastic learners. 

Our Reception classroom is bright and spacious, equipped with everything a little learner needs. Open ended resources, space to play and invent supports their curiosity. By using natural resources and loose parts in their play, children can use their imagination to take their learning in any direction, rather than being restricted with resources and toys which pre-determine their play.

Countdown to Reception

To help children prepare for full time education we run a ‘Countdown to Reception’. This programme of events has been designed to help Pre-School aged children and their parents find out more about The Mount Junior School and the transition from Pre-School to Reception. Activities include Forest School, musical workshops and fun swim. The activities help children become familiar with the Junior School setting and atmosphere.  Throughout the year, children visit The Mount Junior School, meet different members of staff and mix with older pupils. By slowly introducing Pre-School children to the Junior School through enjoyable activities, they learn to feel happy and secure in the surroundings.  This provides them with the confidence and resilience to feel excited about joining Reception in September.
