The Mount School, York is delighted to be hosting the ESTA event, Creating Musicians, Not Just Players, led by the distinguished composer, performer and teacher, Mary Cohen.

The day will include an address to teachers about the importance of chamber music as an integral part of musical learning; a masterclass for young chamber ensembles where Mary Cohen will guide young musicians through their learning and provide teachers with strategies for ensemble teaching; the opportunity for teachers and pupils of all abilities to play in a large string ensemble and explore Mary Cohen’s new composition, Jorvik Tango, especially composed for the event.

This Professional Development day and playing opportunity for pupils is a European String Teachers Association (ESTA) Pathways into Teaching Event. The event is open to ESTA members, non members, pupils and parents.

Mary Cohen is one of the most influential composers of string pedagogy and ensemble music of the modern day, with over 60 volumes published by Faber Music Ltd for Beginner to Advanced level. Her compositions and arrangements are frequently used by examination bodies and feature in many musical festivals. She is well known for the acclaimed Superseries which has transformed modern teaching methods while bringing huge amount of enjoyment to countless student string players. She founded String Quartets From Scratch (SQFS), a club for chamber music for 7 –18 year olds, for which she has written a great deal of ensemble material, resulting in such publications as the Quartetstart series.
