Today, the Pre-School and Junior School at The Mount School came alive with creativity, courage, and collaboration as the children celebrated International Dot Day.
This global event, inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ book “The Dot,” encourages children to believe in their abilities and embrace their unique talents.
The day began with a reading of “The Dot,” a heartwarming tale of a caring teacher who challenges a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark.” What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing.
In the Pre-School, boys and girls embarked on a mission to find dots within their classrooms. From cups and Duplo to plates, toys, and containers, they discovered a world of dotty items. The children then collaborated to create dotty masterpieces, dipping round objects into vibrant paints and printing them onto a large blank canvas.
They then moved onto making their mark outdoors using chalk to turn the playground into a spotty playpark. They had great fun jumping from dot to dot as the large dot in the sky shined down!
After hearing ‘The Dot’ story Key Stage 2 children learnt that just like them, a dot can be anything it wants! They had fun turning a blank dot into something new. Their imaginative creations included a pizza, dartboard, a rolled up hedgehog, showcasing their boundless creativity! Each of the newly created dots are now on display in Junior School foyer – reminding our pupils that every child has the potential to be brave and make their mark in their unique way.
Celebrating events like International Dot Day fosters a love for creativity and learning in young minds. Like our Creative Curriculum, it encourages children to explore their imaginations and believe in their abilities; it’s about nurturing confidence and individuality in young minds. By encouraging students to explore their imaginations and believe in their abilities, we foster a love for learning!
As we celebrate International Dot Day, let us all be inspired by the story of “The Dot” and remember that every child has the potential to be brave and make their mark in their unique way.
